LAND & HISTORY

Old maples, open meadow, and preserved land

The name “Shady Bend” comes from the property’s earlier life as a Unionville farm. According to the Farmington Land Trust, the Schlatter family purchased the farm at 78 West District Road in the 1920s and named it “Shady Bend” for its old maples. The land once included an orchard and truck garden, and later portions of the surrounding woodland and meadow were donated to preserve the landscape rather than allow it to become additional housing. The preserve is closed to the public, so the value here is not public trail access, but the rare beauty of living beside protected land.

The relationship between the home, the grounds, and the surrounding preserved land is best understood on site.
